Definition of Stress:

Stress can be a turn on. It can pump you up, energize you and supply a zest for life.  Stress can also be destructive when it turns into distress.

The most common forms of escape from stress:

Drinking  Liquor

Frequent or heavy eating, especially sweet, high calorie foods
Drinking coffee, colas, or other high caffeine drinks.
Using Marijuana, heavy drugs or mind- altering pills.
Prescription drugs-tranquilizers/pain pills.
Using patent medicines to suppress symptoms.

Using sleeping pills

Lashing out at others, displacing anxiety and anger onto other people.

 

Stress is not the pressure from the outside - the argument, the divorce, the death of a close friend, etc.  These are stressors.  One's response to these stressors constitutes stress.

Stress is not anxiety or tension. 

Anxiety is a generalized fear-reaction to some specific or unspecific source.

Tension is the contraction or tightening of the muscles in one's body, whether voluntary or involuntary.

Stress is the reaction one makes to help them adjust to various situations.  When the sun is the stressor, a person's skin reveals stress by becoming inflamed and painful.  Stress occurs when there is a a substantial imbalance between the environmental demand and the response capability of the focal organism.

Stress Management

A Duke University study concludes that, "Stress management programs can reduce the risk of cardiac events in patients with myocardial ischemia by about 75%."  The American Medical Association (AMA) has endorsed relaxation techniques as valid treatment for back pain, headaches, arthritis, and other painful conditions.
